Dr. Choi believes that the jaws, palate, nasal cavity, and surrounding craniofacial structures treated by orthodontists are closely connected to airway function. This interest led him to pursue advanced education in dental sleep medicine and ultimately earn Diplomate status with the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine.

Airway-Focused Orthodontics and Skeletal Expansion

A major focus of Dr. Choi’s practice is evaluating how orthodontic and skeletal development may influence breathing and airway function.

For appropriate adolescent and adult patients, he utilizes advanced skeletal expansion techniques, including MSE and custom MARPE, to address transverse maxillary deficiency and expand the upper jaw. Because expansion of the maxilla may also affect the nasal cavity and nasal airway dimensions, Dr. Choi carefully evaluates these anatomical relationships when planning treatment for patients with orthodontic and airway-related concerns.

For adult patients, Dr. Choi incorporates custom-fitted MARPE appliances, CBCT-guided treatment planning, 3D-printed surgical guides, and minimally invasive corticotomy techniques when indicated. These technologies allow expansion to be planned with a high degree of precision in patients whose palatal sutures may be more resistant to conventional expansion.

His goal is to approach orthodontic treatment from both a dental and functional perspective—considering not only tooth alignment and facial balance, but also the anatomical structures associated with nasal breathing and the upper airway.

Dental Sleep Medicine

Dr. Choi’s interest in airway-focused orthodontics led him to pursue extensive additional education in dental sleep medicine.

As a Diplomate of the American Board of Dental Sleep Medicine, he has advanced training in the use of oral appliance therapy for appropriately diagnosed patients with obstructive sleep apnea and sleep-disordered breathing, working in collaboration with physicians and other healthcare professionals when indicated.

This additional training allows Dr. Choi to evaluate orthodontic treatment, craniofacial structure, oral appliance therapy, and airway considerations from a more comprehensive perspective.

Education and Orthodontic Training

Dr. Choi began his academic career at the University of California, Irvine, graduating magna cum laude in 2001.

He continued his education at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, where he received the Dean’s Scholarship and earned his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree in 2005. During dental school, he was also recognized with National Dental Board Achievement Awards for his academic and clinical performance.

Following dental school, Dr. Choi completed his specialty training in orthodontics at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, where he received advanced training in the diagnosis and treatment of complex orthodontic conditions.

He later achieved Diplomate status with the American Board of Orthodontics, reflecting his commitment to continued clinical excellence and evidence-based orthodontic care.

Advanced Clear Aligner Treatment

Dr. Choi provides both traditional orthodontic treatment and advanced clear aligner therapy, including Invisalign, Spark, and Memoform Aligners.

His interest in digital orthodontics and 3D-printing technology led him to incorporate Memoform Aligners, direct 3D-printed aligners that utilize shape-memory material and digital treatment planning.

By combining digital scanning, 3D printing, CBCT imaging, skeletal expansion, clear aligner therapy, and traditional orthodontics, Dr. Choi is able to individualize treatment according to each patient's dental, skeletal, and functional needs.

Professional Commitment

Dr. Choi is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists and remains committed to continuing education in orthodontics, craniofacial development, airway-focused treatment, skeletal expansion, and dental sleep medicine.

His approach reflects a simple philosophy: orthodontics should consider more than straight teeth. Treatment should account for the relationship between the teeth, jaws, facial structures, function, and airway whenever clinically appropriate.

Outside the Office

Outside the clinic, Dr. Choi enjoys golf, snowboarding, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Most importantly, he enjoys spending time with his three children and sharing outdoor activities and new experiences with them.
